The Ultimate Guide to Bay Area Radio

You can count on radio stations to change hands or formats sooner or later, so we cannot guarantee this directory is up-to-date at all times. We have expanded our listing to include digital channels (click on Home for more details on digital HD radio). Since some radio stations simulcast on digital television, we have also added the channel for the one that’s free on terrestrial TV and the cable channels for the 30 local stations that may be available to all subscribers in the Bay Area (check with your cable TV company). See Bay Area Radio Airplay for our compilation of real-time playlists (you may notice a slight delay when this page loads). You’ll find some programming information at Bay Area Radio Shows.

A Little Face Time

We’d like to hear from the hundreds of you who visit this page every month. To that end, we’ve created our own page on Facebook. You’ll find a forum and other exclusive features. If you’d rather send us a private e-mail, you might want to add our new e-mail address to your white list just in case.

Directory Legend

We have divided the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area into seven locally recognized regions.

  • San Francisco (San Francisco Co.)
  • East Bay (Alameda and Contra Costa Co.)
  • Silicon Valley/South Bay (Santa Clara Co.)
  • Peninsula (San Mateo Co.)
  • Wine Country (Sonoma and Napa Co.)
  • North Bay (Marin Co.)
  • Delta-Suisun Bay (Solano Co.)

Note that the most powerful Bay Area radio stations’ frequencies are in boldface. The physical locations of the weakest radio stations are listed for your convenience. Also highlighted are the call letters of local commercial stations (for-profit operations based in California)—excluding translators, repeaters, and boosters. Lest you run into dead links in the future, we have opted to provide the radio stations’ latest Web sites with no links. Key to comments: “A” if radio airplay monitored in real time, “B” if Internet broadcast available.

Range: Maximum signal strength for clear reception; FM radio range largely determined by power and elevation of transmitter (based on Jeffrey Dingle’s “Essential Radio”):

S0: Under 10 miles
S1: 10-15 miles
S2: 15-25 miles
S3: 30-50 miles
S4: 50-80 miles

Owner/parent company: Note that in the case of a leased frequency, we list the actual broadcaster instead of the owner of the frequency.
